African American Fabrics: New Family Member

"Weesie" -Wards 7 Jewel Zig Zag Sewing Machine URR988
Meet my new family member, "Wessie". She has a heart of steel and purrs like a Kitten, as she tackles my toughest jobs. Talk about a bargain! I got her at a yard sale. She's a Wards 7 Jewel Zig Zag Sewing Machine- URR 988. I've had my eye on the lookout for a vintage machine to adopt; and to handle some of my heavy duty work-since I couldn't afford a "high-quality" new machine. Today, I spent a large portion of my the day looking for the cams and accessories for "Wessie"--I finally found them on ebay. Needless to say, I am soooooooooo EXCITED!! Can you believe it? She's going to be happy I bought her these; and, I imagine she'll reward me for my efforts. One more internet "bonus" --->This ad I found- dating "Weesie" as 43 years old. I am going to frame and hang this near her. This ad prices her original value at $100.  FACT: a $1.00 in 1963 had the same buying power as $7.10 in 2010. So, I figure I got a $770 machine for $20!
I've never used cams before, so if any of you have tips, I'd appreciate them.

  1. I love your Wessie and just tonight I bought one of her sisters! I got mine for $100.00 with a nice cabinet and I asked for a foot pedal adaptor so I didn't have to use the knee one. Mine is missing the cams also. It just has one in it, the straight stitch one. Have you had a go with your cams? My machine is tan and green instead of blue. It's still out in the car, we got home late. I will have to see if it is the same model number as yours. I love that it is an older machine, I don't like free arms and I don't like all that plastic! :o) It was great finding you and your journal.

  2. LOL!! OMG it's great to know someone with Wessie'sg sister. I hope she makes you happy. I am really enjoying her. She a strong sis!! I put some pretty heavy things through her, which she's sewn without much complaint. We took her to the doc last week, she lost her electricity to the light bulb---I figured it was best to not let her go too long with her "ideas".
I've seen cams on ebay several time since purchasing her, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem getting cams. It's worth the hunt, because it's yield some pretty nice decorative stitches. Also, make certian you look into attachements. Send pics of her soon.
